Friday Box Office Analysis (9/8)
By Lee Tistaert Published September 9, 2006
{The Covenant} failed to deliver on the level of other genre flicks including Cursed and The Skulls, but the movie also doesn't have any star-power.
Screem Gems? teen thriller, The Covenant, topped the box office on Friday with a small take of $3.1 million from 2,681 theaters. The pic failed to deliver on the level of other genre flicks including Cursed and The Skulls (which grossed $3.7 million and $4.4 million, respectively), but the movie also doesn't have any star-power. Nonetheless, the movie could see a Saturday increase of up to 17% or so, and should see a steep fall on Sunday. For the weekend, Covenant looks to collect about $9.0 million, and should disappear quickly.
The murder mystery Hollywoodland debuted softly on Friday as well with just $1.9 million from 1,549 theaters for a tame $1,226 average. The Ben Affleck/Adrien Brody noir film has relatively strong appeal amongst serious moviegoers, though, which could help deliver a jump of 30% or more on Saturday. And Sunday shouldn?t be that much lower than Friday given the film?s senior pull, which could put Hollywoodland at a three-day take of $6.0 million.
Tony Ja?s The Protector also didn?t do anything on Friday, which marks Ja?s second mediocre following in the U.S. after Ong Bak also failed to catch on last year. The martial arts import grossed $1.8 million from 1,541 theaters and should've been an easier sell than Hollywoodland due to its fan base of young males (despite the difference in star-power). However, ads did make the movie look like it was appealing to cult fan boys, and this genre can be hit and miss at the box office (the targeted demographics are not much different than those of Snakes on a Plane). Saturday could see a small increase, but the movie could also drop close to 20% depending upon its cult sensibility; for the weekend, Protector looks to gross about $4.5 - 5.0 million.
