Prairie Home Companion: Comparisons
By Lee Tistaert Published June 7, 2006
Box office comparisons for A Prairie Home Companion.
Robert Altman's one of those filmmakers who moviegoers either like or hate, which explains the somewhat limited release platform his Prairie Home Companion feature is getting despite an ensemble cast of first-rate actors.
I'm actually surprised this film is getting 725 theaters, as this feels like a variation of a Christopher Guest flick in which droves of older intellectuals in the top markets will show up. Since the film is playing at various venues in LA, most theaters are limited to just 1 screen; many would probably have at least 2 if the overall theater count was heavily reduced.
Prairie Home Companion is likely to do at least $30,000 at key theaters in LA and potentially more in NY, but the wider release should heavily dampen the overall weekend average; a three-day gross of nearly $7.0 million could result for a near $10,000 average. The film might compete with Altman's previous ensemble feature, Gosford Park, which earned $41.3 million domestically after opening to $395,000 in 9 theaters (averaging $43,907/screen).
For those unaware, Prairie Home Companion is based on a radio station segment of the same name (which is huge in LA).
