An Inconvenient Truth Opens
By Lee Tistaert Published May 25, 2006
The first day tally is powerful considering such a figure is considered monstrous for a Friday when adults can see films more easily.
Al Gore's argument on global warming drew droves of moviegoers to the art houses on Wednesday, as An Inconvenient Truth opened to $79,000 in just 4 theaters in LA and NY, averaging $19,750 a screen. The first day tally is powerful considering such a figure is considered monstrous for a Friday when adults can see films more easily.
Going into the weekend, the feature could be heading for a record per-screen average if it is not front-loaded. The Blair Witch Project had debuted on a Wednesday in 2 theaters in NY and averaged $32,000/screen, and on the weekend expanded to 27 theaters and amassed $55,000/screen for three days. In just 4 theaters nationwide, Inconvenient Truth has a shot at up to $40,000/screen on Friday (its LA theater charges $14). That is, of course, if its political nature doesn't send everyone out in the first few days (Fahrenheit 9/11 debuted on a Friday and was front-loaded, though in 850 more theaters).
The trailer for An Inconvenient Truth had been making the rounds of art houses starting with the premiere of Friends with Money, and had been picking up quite a bit of gossip.

June 8, 2006 A seminar about these issues {of global warming} could be quite engrossing, but Gore?s weak onscreen presence makes this feature almost intolerable. -- Lee Tistaert
