The debut not only eclipsed the first Ice Age entry but even beat Disney and Pixar?s The Incredibles, which had taken in $20.5 million in 3,933 theaters.
Fox came in full throttle at the box office on Friday with Ice Age 2: The Meltdown, as the family release debuted in 3,963 theaters and raked in a mammoth-sized $21.7 million in ticket sales, averaging $5,463 per-screen. The debut not only eclipsed the first Ice Age entry (which opened to $13.5 million on Fri in 2002) but the opening day earning even beat Disney and Pixar?s The Incredibles, which had taken in $20.5 million in 3,933 theaters for a $5,213 average.

Though there is a chance Ice Age 2 could follow through with a weekend of $60 - 70 million, this is in fact the weekend in March that movies can fall on Saturday from their Friday take. Given that this is a kids? movie and Saturday and Sunday matinees will be a hot ticket, Ice Age might see an increase to roughly $25/26 million, but it could also very well drop to around $20.5 million. Either way, Fox will still take the honor of the biggest box office opening of the month in history; the only question is whether they have the momentum to overpower Disney and Pixar, which will be quite a conversation piece for studio executives.

If Ice Age 2 does fall on Saturday, the three-day gross should look like roughly $58 million, while an increase could put it at around $63 million. A $70 million figure a la The Incredibles ($70.5 million) will require a hefty second day boost; sequels seldom receive that, and this franchise doesn?t seem to have the diverse demographic fan base that Disney and Pixar have built-in.

The other big news of the weekend comes from Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction, which opened in a surprisingly limited platform of just 1,453 theaters. The Sharon Stone sequel to the 1992 original grossed just $1.1 million on Friday for a pathetic $779 average. In recent weeks MGM was counting on its spicy sexual material for an ad-campaign with Stone appearing in interviews solely talking about her nude sequences. Now 48-years-old, the idea of seeing the actress in an erotic movie may not be top priority (especially when there?s the internet?), and she is the only star in the film with a name; and also, like Analyze That, this wasn?t exactly a sequel people needed. Basic Instinct looks like an early contender to rule the Razzie awards in 2007, which won?t be anything new for Stone; her previous joke-of-a-movie, Catwoman, was also nominated there. Expect the sequel to come in with around $3 million for the weekend.
