Friday Box Office Analysis (4/29)

The movie opened in the same range as The Pacifier, which had debuted to $8.6 million on opening day.
Just like when some people had placed Be Cool ahead of The Pacifier, Disney came out on top again with Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. The family flick, which is based off the hugely popular book of the same name, grossed $8.1 million in ticket sales on Friday, averaging a strong $2,586 per-screen. The movie probably would?ve had even more potential had it been geared to a wider audience beyond just families, as the book has a diverse fan base.
The movie opened in the same range as The Pacifier, which had debuted to $8.6 million on opening day, averaging $2,745/screen in 3,131 theaters. It also outpaced The Time Machine, which grossed $7.3 million on opening day and $2,493/screen in 2,944 theaters. The Pacifier had jumped 58% on Saturday while The Time Machine only saw a boost of 25%. Vin Diesel?s presence might have been a big factor in the robust incline, whereas star-power is somewhat limited for Hitchhikers Guide. A Saturday incline somewhere in the high-20% range up to the mid-30% range could result, which should give the movie a weekend gross of around $25.0 million.
xXx: State of the Union experienced the same fate as Fox?s action flick take-off, Elektra, on Friday. The sequel, which stars Ice Cube, grossed a pitiful $4.4 million, averaging just $1,252 per-screen in 3,480 theaters. In comparison, the first xXx, which had featured Vin Diesel, opened in August of 2002 to $17.3 million and averaged a mighty $5,131 per-screen. Elektra had opened in January of this year to $4.5 million and $1,390/screen. Moviegoers seemed to pass by the xXx sequel carelessly, and despite the big opening of the first one, word of mouth wasn?t very good.
I find it kind of ironic that with State of the Union I had tried to make up for my really bad Scooby-Doo 2 weekend prediction from last March, which was roughly $11.0 million, and the movie had grossed $29.0 million. Now xXx will likely come in with something like that this weekend.
Elektra jumped 9% on its second day, but considering State of the Union is a sequel, there is a chance of it being front-loaded, or simply a smaller incline in comparison. The movie could possibly be compared to Blade: Trinity, which earned $5.3 million ($1,823/screen) in its third day (which was Friday) and saw a 25% boost on Saturday to $6.6 million ($2,279/screen). A safer bet for xXx should be on the softer side, as a weekend gross of roughly $12.0 could result.
