Closer mirrored the opening night business that the Bridget Jones sequel extracted.
When your film offers some of the hottest names of Hollywood with one of the most acclaimed directors in the business, and only opens in 476 theaters, I guess big numbers will result. Closer, Mike Nichols? dark relationship film starring Jude Law, Julia Roberts, Natalie Portman, and Clive Owen, mirrored the opening night business that the Bridget Jones sequel extracted. Grossing $2.8 million on Friday, the film averaged an epic $5,832 per-screen.
Bridget Jones only jumped up a little over 10% on Saturday, which is what Closer should follow through with; Saturday could be about $3.1 million, with Sunday likely to be about $2.0 million. That would put the film at a weekend take of roughly $8.0 million, with a massive average in the neighborhood of $16,000. Mainstream success, like the Bridget Jones sequel, isn?t likely to result for this film once it expands to nationwide release given its nasty premise.
