Bombarding 3,737 theaters on Wednesday, Shrek 2 started off strongly at the box office, hinting toward a potentially monster weekend frame. Grossing $11.8 million in ticket sales, the Mike Myers/Cameron Diaz/Eddie Murphy hugely anticipated comedy averaged $3,154 per-screen.
The movie performed in line with the opening day (Friday) figure of the original Shrek ($11.6 million - $3,226 per-screen), and similarly to the second day gross of Daddy Day Care ($10.9 million - $3,247 per-screen). And in terms of Wednesday debuts, Shrek 2 surpassed Toy Story 2, which took in $9.5 million for a $2,949 average in 3,235 theaters. The said sequel jumped to $13.2 million ($4,093 per-screen) on Thursday, and posted a $57.4 million 3-day weekend frame.
However, Toy Story 2 opened around Thanksgiving when the mid-week figures are boosted with schools being out of session. Though Shrek 2 has an early summer debut, a good quantity of its fan base is in school, which still gives it a nice chance to explode on Friday. The movie does have many fans who aren?t in school during the week, but Shrek might be the type of flick that can wait until Friday to be seen, rather than rushing out immediately on Wednesday.
With 4,163 theaters playing the sequel on Friday, DreamWorks obviously sees something gargantuan on the horizon, as its Friday figure could reach $26.0 million (and possibly up to $29.0). For the 3-day weekend, Shrek 2 could be headed for the mid-$80?s, and in the vicinity of $100 million for the 5-day frame.
