Sense
After an incident causes blog writing John (John Malkovich) unwillingly to visit a doctor, he learns that he has a terminal disease that will cause to lose all his senses in time. Never showing his true feelings to those he interacts with, John decides to conspire to hide the disease from his family. Patricia Clarkson plays his meddling wife trying to find out his secret.

The film depicts the progression of the time between John's learning of his diagnosis and his demise. As the disease progresses, John begins to lose his senses one by one. The film will be shot from John's point of view. John's Internet blog portrays the feelings that he could never show to other human beings face to face as he faces the ordeal. Rather than use narration, this film is meant to be a heart tugging visual and audio focused picture. "Sense" aims to be different by putting the viewer into the shoes of John literally.

-- Script Pitch III Host Commentary --
by Lee Tistaert and Stephen Lucas

Lee's Analysis:

John Malkovich could probably carry out this role instinctively, but one concern is whether the story gets repetitive with him simply losing senses one after the other, in predictability. There might need to be an extra layer within, or a catch of some kind that adds on to this main idea (whether we know what it is at first or not). If you can figure out that extra layer, or figure out a way so that repetition isn’t a danger, then this is a film I’d be easily willing to see.

There’s a film called Spider starring Ralph Fiennes that this has a danger of becoming in the worst case scenario, as I thought that film was overly artsy and repetitive. But in order to fulfill an entire running time on this, extra ingredients might be necessary to keep the plot afloat.

Stephen's Analysis:

"Sense" could be a wonderful movie if you take it in the right direction. This could be a very moody, character-driven piece, much like something that would be shown at Sundance and around other film festival circuits.

Malkovich seems like a smart choice for the role, but could you find a more daring actor to play the part? This film could be an award contender and I can imagine actors drooling over a part like this. From your pitch, I desire a very serious, somber, and thought-provoking film; if I’m reading that far into the idea, studios might to do the same. Bravo.
