Though Naqoyqatsi does get old after a while, there are segments that are dazzling to watch.
Naqoyqatsi is a hard project to review, as there is no plot and there are no characters; the feature is a collection of visual imagery montages supported by a musical score. I am usually into experimental features as long as the material doesn?t grow redundant, and though Naqoyqatsi does get old after a while, there are segments that are dazzling to watch. This is a feature that will try the patience of those who need to be easily entertained, but can be occasionally intriguing for those who are into very artsy projects.
Naqoyqatsi starts off on an interesting note and leads into cinematography shots that are very absorbing and almost imaginative, but the project lacks oomph during in between segments. The film presents odd angles of buildings and structures (inside and out) in continuous shots, slow motion movement of ocean waves crashing, animals darting across open lands, and other such activity.
The feature also attempts to build intrigue with other experiments involving movement of smoke over a black screen, and traveling through (outer) space rapidly, but overstays its welcome with clips like these. Naqoyqatsi is an 80-minute collection of these montages, and while some of its material garners attention and fascination, the consistency rate is just not there.
In a theater, this project would probably put some folks to sleep at a few spots, which makes the DVD an important component, as viewers will be able to fast forward through segments that are just downright boring. In its attempt at something different (cinematically speaking), Naqoyqatsi is unique; but at its running time, the experience is overdone, making the feature a mixed bag.
