Judge seems to have compiled elements together for the heck of it and what’s worse is that it isn’t that funny.
Mike Judge has gone from a clever cult icon to something far more irrelevant. “Idiocracy," a supposed satire on the dumbing-down of America, was instead an unwatchable mess of gross gags and easy laughs. “Extract” is not as ugly to look at but it winds-up being just as pointless.

Jason Bateman plays Joel, the owner of an extract company stressed out by work and the fact that his wife (Kristen Wiig) won’t have sex with him. His biggest work problem comes when one of his employees, Step (Clifton Collins Jr.), takes one of the most uncomfortable shots to the balls ever captured on film while on duty, and even though he doesn’t want to sue the company, he is being strung along by Cindy (Mila Kunis).

Cindy is a sexy con artist purposely dating Step, and working at the company, who’s interested in stealing Step’s big cash settlement. Joel, meanwhile, wants to have an affair with her but the guilt of cheating on his wife is too much for him. Dean (Ben Affleck), his pill-popping, drug abusing best friend (who calls himself a spiritualist), tells him to hire a gigolo (Dustin Milligan) to seduce his wife, that way no guilt when he cheats on her. And after accidentally taking a horse tranquilizer, Joel thinks this is a great idea. Later Joel discovers Cindy's true colors and has to untangle the mess he's created.

This movie isn’t much of a sex comedy or drug comedy or lawsuit comedy or really much of anything. It goes nowhere. Judge seems to have compiled these elements together just for the heck of it and what’s worse is that it also isn’t that funny. If it weren’t for some good comedic acting here, there wouldn’t be a laugh in sight. Bateman gives an understated performance as a guy whose life is slowly falling apart and he reacts well to the far more outlandish supporting performances. David Koechner shows up as an annoyingly over-talkative neighbor. Affleck is absurdly baked in his druggie role, and Milligan is absurdly stupid as the gigolo. But the one who steals the movie is Matt Schulze as the most intimidatingly funny pothead you would ever want to share a bong with. And of course Mila Kunis is ridiculously hot and looks great in cut-off shorts but like the rest of “Extract," doesn’t really do much otherwise.
